With offices across the United States under National Association of the Deaf  and partnerships with Hawaii Islands communities, ASAD works to enhance the well-being of the Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing people and to advance human rights and democratic values for all.

MISSION

The main objectives are to provide workshops, have exhibits, and to conduct official decision-making business on the following:
a. Discussing major issues, concerns and needs;
b. Electing new officers and board members; and
c. Revising the By-Laws.

An Awards Luncheon is also held to recognize people in the following categories:

  1. Golden Hand Award

  2. Legislator of the Year

  3. Deaf Youth Leadership

  4. Interpreter of the Year

  5. Community Service.

A new Miss Deaf Hawai`i, who goes on to compete for the national title of Miss Deaf America, is also selected. In even-numbered years, ASAD sends two delegates to the NAD conferences.


Other objectives of ASAD include:

  1. Advocating the educational and civil rights of deaf and hard of hearing citizens in the State of Hawai`i.

  2. Developing a positive image of deaf and hard of hearing people.

  3. Improving the quality and standard of living for all deaf and hard of hearing people.

  4. Promoting better public services for deaf and hard of hearing people, which include:

  5. Deaf information and referral services

  6. Legislative issues

  7. Public relations

  8. Representation of the deaf community in the State of Hawai`i

  9. Tourism information for deaf visitors

  10. Workshop on special topics

  11. Town hall meetings
